Continuity of Insulation Surveys

Under Building Regulation Section L2 – Conservation of Fuel and Power – responsibility for declaring compliance with the requirement for continuity of insulation rests with the person carrying out the work. Infrared inspection by a qualified thermographer in accordance with BRE report 176 or BS EN 1387:1999 is an accepted method of achieving compliance.

An Infrared survey is a quick and non-destructive method for detecting areas of missing, moisture-laden or otherwise damaged insulation in walls, crawlspaces and attics or around doors, windows, electrical outlets and other access plates. All of these deficiencies can elevate a building’s energy costs by allowing cold air to enter the building and heated air to escape in the winter, and the reverse in the warmer summer months. IR can also identify badly or un-insulated pipes, another source of costly heat loss.
